Texas Health Steps

Texas Health Steps is a comprehensive and preventative child health service for individuals from birth through 21 years of age who are on Medicaid.  The program focuses on the medical, dental, and case management services for this group of clients.    Medical checkups can identify health problems when they are in the early stages and may prevent health problems that make it difficult for children to learn and grow.  Little River Medical Clinic – Rockdale offers the medical checkup required for children on this Medicaid program at no cost to the patient.

Medical checkups in the Texas Health Steps Medicaid program are required for babies and toddlers ages:

  • 2 weeks

  • 2 months

  • 4 months

  • 6 months

  • 9 months

  • 12 months

  • 15 months

  • 18 months

  • Once per year for ages 2-5

Medical checkups are required for older children ages:

  • 6 years

  • 8 years

  • 10 years

Medical checkups are also required for preteens, teens, and young adults ages:

  • 11-20 years

The components of a medical checkup include an initial history, measurements, nutritional screening, developmental screening, vision and hearing screening, physical examination, laboratory screening as required, and health education and anticipatory guidance.  Another major component of the medical program is assessing the child’s need for required and recommended immunizations and providing those shots during the medical checkup.
