Animal-Assisted Therapy Adds to Complimentary, Volunteer Services at Richards Memorial Hospital
Rockdale, Texas (August 25, 2008) – Richards Memorial Hospital has teamed up with local Delta Society Pet Partner, Marlene Coffman to provide Animal-Assisted Therapy to hospital patients and assisted living residents.
Marlene and Troy, the therapy dog, make rounds throughout Richards Memorial Hospital every Thursday visiting patients and residents. “The residents in our assisted living wing look forward to each Thursday when they get to see and interact with Troy. I have seen a positive change in some of the residents after having the opportunity to develop a friendship with Troy; often times they will just sit and talk to him and pet him. It really seems to brighten their day.” explains Gail Crawford, RMH Assisted Living Director.
Animal Assisted Therapy provides opportunities for motivational, educational and recreational benefits for patients. Some of the goals include increased vocabulary, increased attention and focus, increased and improved interactions with others, increased self-esteem, and reduced stress and anxiety.
Marlene and Troy have participated in numerous training programs to become qualified for Animal Assisted Therapy. These animals are required to have current vaccinations, be free of internal and external parasites, be house trained, be free of signs of illness, and be cleaned and groomed within 24 hours of their visit.
